The author introduces the relative concept of the singularity category which is defined with respect to a contravariantly finite subcategory \(\mathcal{X}\) of mod-\(R\). He proves that the relative singularity category is equivalent as a triangulated category to the homotopy category \(K^{-,P}(\mathcal{X})\). It is shown that the classical category \(D_{sg}(R)\) is a Verdier quotient of the relative singularity categories. The relative singularity category is applied to construct singular equivalences. The author also gives some applications of these results.
