The description of the commutative \(C^*\)-algebras generated by Toeplitz operators acting on weighted Berg\-man spaces by now are well known for the cases of the unit disk, unit ball, complex projective domains, and for some other cases. In all these cases, the principal result states that, for any maximal abelian subgroup \(H\) of byholomorphisms of the domain in question, the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators whose \(L_{\infty}\)-symbols are invariant under the action of \(H\) is commutative on each weighted Bergman space. The authors extend the above result to the case of any bounded symmetric domain (of higher rank). They show, in particular, that for higher rank bounded symmetric domains the commutative \(C^*\)-algebras are not anymore defined in general by the maximal abelian subgroup of byholomorphisms. The main result of the paper instead states that, for any subgroup \(H\) of byholomorphisms of a bounded symmetric domain \(D\) with a multiplicity-free restriction of the holomorphic discrete series representation, the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators whose \(L_{\infty}\)-symbols are invariant under the action of \(H\) is commutative on each weighted Bergman space over the domain \(D\). The examples of such subgroup \(H\) include, in particular, the maximal compact subgroup, the group of natural translations in the unbounded realization of a bounded symmetric domain of tube type, and some others listed in the paper. In many cases considered in the paper, the authors describe the unitary operator (specific for each case) that simultaneously diagonalizes all Toeplitz operators that generate a commutative \(C^*\)-algebra. For a compact subgroups \(H\) of byholomorphisms, the authors show that the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators with \(H\)-invariant symbols is commutative if and only if the restriction to \(H\) of the holomorphic discrete series representation is multiplicity-free.
