Let \(G\) be a connected non-compact Lie group and let \(X_1,\dots, X_\nu\) be left-invariant vector fields on \(G\) that satisfy Hörmander's condition. Then the sub-Laplacian \(\Delta=-\sum_{j=1}^\nu X_j^2\) is hypoelliptic and essentially self-adjoint on \(L^2(\mu)\), where \(\mu\) is the right Haar measure of \(G\). Let \(\psi\) be a nontrivial positive character on \(G\). Define the vector field \(X=\sum_{j=1}^\nu d\psi_e(X_j) X_j\), where \(e\) denotes the identity of \(G\). Then the sub-Laplacian with drift \(\Delta_X=\Delta-X\) is essentially self-adjont on \(L^2(\mu_X)\), where \(d\mu_X=\psi\, d\mu\). In the paper under review the authors prove a general multiplier theorem for the sub-Laplacians with drift \(\Delta_X\) on non-compact Lie groups. This considerably improves and extends a result by \textit{W. Hebisch} et al. [Math. Z. 251, No. 4, 899--927 (2005; Zbl 1092.47016)]. Applications include groups of polynomial growth and solvable extensions of stratified groups.
