The following system of chemotaxis equations \[ u_t=\nabla\cdot[(u+\alpha)^{m_1-1}\nabla u-\chi u(u+\alpha)^{m_2-2}\nabla v], \] \[ \Delta v-M+u=0, M=\frac{1}{|\Omega|}\int_\Omega u_0(x) dx, \] \(\alpha,\, \chi>0\), is studied in bounded smooth domains \(\Omega\) of \(\mathbb R^n\), supplemented with the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. If \(m_1\le 1\), \(m_2>1\), under the assumption \(p_0>\frac{n}{2}(m_2-m_1)>1\) it is shown for nonconstant initial data \(u_0\) that solutions become unbounded in \(L^{p_0}(\Omega)\) in a finite time. An estimate of the blowup time is given. The analysis involves the functional \(\Phi(t)=\int_\Omega (u(x,t)+\alpha)^p dx\) for some \(p>1\).
