      For some parameters \(s,p,q\), the nowadays well-known homogeneous spaces \(\dot{F}^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) can be normed by \[ \Big\| \Big( \int^\infty_0 \big| t^{-s/2} \varphi (tA) f \big|^q \frac{dt}{t} \Big)^{1/q} | L_p (\mathbb R^n) \Big\|, \] where \(A = -\Delta\) is the Laplacian and the holomorphic function \(\varphi\) refers to the Gauss-Weierstrass semi-group and its derivative, generated by, for example, \(\varphi(z) = z e^{-z}\). In the case of the related inhomogeneous spaces, one has to add \(\|f \, | L_p (\mathbb R^n)\|\). The paper generalizes this set-up in several directions, replacing \(L_p (\mathbb R^n)\) by a Banach function space \(X\) and \(A\) by a class of so-called \({\mathcal R}_s\)-sectorial operators in \(X\) admitting a sufficiently powerful functional calculus. Then \[ \| x \| = \Big\| \Big( \int^\infty_0 \big| t^{-s} \varphi (tA) x \big|^q \frac{dt}{t} \Big)^{1/q} | X \Big\| \] is the related homogeneous counterpart. In the case of inhomogeneous spaces, one has to add \(\| x \, | X \|\). The paper develops a corresponding theory, concentrating on equivalent norms, real and complex interpolation.
