Isometric immersions $f:M\to CP^2$ of a closed surface $M$ into the complex projective plane $CP^2$ are considered. The conformal global invariant functional \[ W_N(f)=\int_m (\bar{K}^\bot-K^\bot) dM \] for such immersions is studied. The critical surfaces of this functional are called normal critical surfaces. As the main results of the article, we mark out the characterizations of some important topological properties of the normal critical surfaces immersed the complex projective plane $CP^2$. In particular, a criterion for a normal critical surfaces immersed in $CP^2$ to be minimal surface with constant Kählerian angle is established.
