This very interesting paper is devoted to the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) system \[ i\partial_tu+\partial_x^2u=\alpha uv+\beta|u|^2u, \quad t,x\in\mathbb{R}, \] \[ \partial_tv+\partial_x^3v+(1/2)\partial_x(v^2)=\gamma \partial_x(|u|^2), \] \[ u(x,0)=u_0(x), \qquad v(x,0)=v_0(x), \] where \(u(x,t)\) is a complex-valued function, \(v(x,t)\) is a real-valued function, and \(\alpha , \beta , \gamma \) are real constants. The system appears in the mathematical model describing the interaction of a short and a long wave in the theory of capillary-gravity waves and can also be used to describe the interaction of the Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves in plasma physics. The authors prove that in the general case \(\beta \neq 0\) the system is locally well-posed in the space \(L^2\times H^{-3/4}\), and if \(\beta =0\) then it is locally well-posed in \(H^s\times H^{-3/4}\) with \(-3/16 <s\leq 1/4\). This result improves the corresponding result of Corcho and Linares (2007). Idea of the proof is to establish some bilinear and trilinear estimates in the space \(G^s\times F^s\), where \(G^s\) and \(F^s\) are dyadic Bourgain-type spaces related to the Schrödinger operator \(i\partial_t+\partial_x^2\) and the Airy operator \(i\partial_t+\partial_x^3\), respectively, but with a modification on \(F^s\) in low frequency part of functions with a weaker structure related to the maximal function estimate of Airy operator.
