    The author considers the functional equation \[ f(x+M(f(x))y) = f(x) f(y),\tag{1} \] which generalizes the exponential equation and the Gołąb-Schinzel equation \[ f(x+f(x)y) = f(x)f(y).\tag{2} \] The Gołąb-Schinzel equation was introduced by \textit{S. Gołąb} and \textit{A. Schinzel} [Publ. Math. Debrecen 6, 113--125 (1959; Zbl 0083.35004)]. The Gołąb-Schinzel type equation \[ f(x+f(x)^n y) = f(x) f(y) \] was introduced by \textit{J. Brzdek} [Aequationes Math. 59, No.~3, 248--254 (2000; Zbl 0961.39011)]. Let \(X\) be a real separable \(F\)-space. The author characterizes solutions \(f : X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) and \(M : \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) of the functional equation \textrm{(1)} under the assumption that \(| f(x) | \subset (0, a)\) for all \(x\) in some nonzero Christensen measurable set \(A \subset X\) and some \(a>0\), which generalizes the result of \textit{E. Jablońska} [Acta Math. Hung. 125, No.~1--2, 113--119 (2009; Zbl 1212.39035)] for the functional equation (2).
