The problem of theoretical characterization of the signals with sparse expansions relative to the nonstationary Gabor frames (NSGF) dictionaries is investigated. A sparse expansion means an expansion for which the original signal can be approximated at a certain rate by thresholding the expansion coefficients. NSGFs are studied in the framework of decomposition spaces which were introduced by Feichtinger and Gröbner. For a given painless NSGF a compatible decomposition space is constructed and proved that the NSGF forms a Banach frame for the compatible decomposition space. It is proved that the decomposition space norm can be completely characterized by a sparseness condition on the frame coefficients. Moreover, some application to nonlinear approximation theory is given.
