The study of nilpotent and periodic self-maps is a fundamental part of the study of chromatic homotopy theory. The existence of certain periodic self-maps is closely related to the Balmer spectrum of the category of finite \(p\)-local spectra. In the setting of \(A\)-equivariant homotopy theory, where \(A\) is a finite abelian \(p\) for example, the Balmer spectrum is well-understood, but much less is known about periodic self-maps. The article under review extends the state of knowledge of periodic self maps in the \(A\)-equivariant context and also extends what is known about localizations in this context. This work builds on the current understanding of \(A\)-equivariant cobordism and \(A\)-equivariant formal groups. Classically, one can associate a type, which is an element \(n\in \overline{\mathbb{N}}=\{0,1,\dots \}\cup \{\infty\}\), to a finite \(p\)-local spectrum, and a \(v_n\) self-map. In the equivariant context, the authors consider admissible type functions from the set of subgroups of \(A\) to \(\overline{\mathbb{N}}\) and they study self-maps associated to an admissible type function. These are maps \(v\) associated to a subset of the set of subgroups \(S\) such that \(v^{\Phi B}\) is a \(v_{m}\) self-map if \(B\) is in \(S\) and \(m\) is the value of the type function at \(B\) and it is nilpotent otherwise. The authors prove that in the case where \(S=\{B\}\), then such self-maps exist. The authors also construct analogues of the Johnson-Wilson theories associated to an admissible type functions such that the localization is compatible with the geometric realization for the group \(B\). This extends previous work on this question. Using this localization theory, the authors prove a smashing theorem, chromatic fracture theorem and a chromatic convergence theorem. The authors also study Mahowald invariants and highlight several examples in the case \(A=C_2\), where computations are plentiful enough to tell a more complete story. The article is well-written and it extends the current knowledge in the subject significantly making it a useful contribution to the equivariant chromatic stable homotopy theory literature.
