The setting in this article is that of a hyper-Kähler manifold \((M,\omega,\Omega)\), i.e., a compact Kähler holomorphically symplectic manifold, which is also of maximal holonomy, meaning simply-connected and such that \(H^{2,0}(M)=\mathbb{C}\). Then, the toric suspensions are considered.\N\NActually it all starts with a complex manifold \(M\) and a set \(f_1,\ldots,f_{2k}\in\Aut(M)\) of commuting holomorphic automorphisms. Given a lattice \(\Lambda\subset\mathbb{C}^{k}\) of rank \(2k\) generated by \(\xi_1,\ldots,\xi_{2k}\), there is an action of \(\mathbb{Z}^{2k}\) on \(M\times\mathbb{C}^k\) generated by the maps \((m,z)\mapsto(f_j(m),z+\xi_j)\), for all \(1\leq j\leq 2k\). The quotient space is called a toric suspension and is denoted by \(S(M,f_1,\ldots,f_{2k})\).\N\NA further consideration is on the classification of the automorphisms \(f_j\) according to their isometric action on the space \(H^{1,1}(M,\mathbb{R})\) for the so called Bogomolov-Beauville-Fujiki pseudo-metric \(q\). The \(f_j\) can fall in one and only one of three cases, elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic, according to their eigenvector positions relative to the positive cone of \(q\).\N\NThen, the authors focus on hyperbolic automorphisms \(f:M\rightarrow M\). For the case \(k=2\), the elliptic surface \(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}^2\) gives rise to a so-called hyperbolic suspension \(S(M,f,\mathrm{Id}_M)\). This is another way of finding the mapping torus of \(M\).\N\NA hyperbolic suspension is never a Kähler manifold. Instead the authors prove in Theorem 4.2 that if \(M\) is Hermitian and balanced, i.e. \(\omega^{n-1}\) is closed (\(n=\dim_\mathbb{C}M\)), and if two commuting biholomorphisms \(f_1,f_2\) preserve a volume form, then \(S(M,f_1,f_2)\) over the elliptic surface also admits a balanced metric.\N\NAt this point the study returns to the hyper-Kähler framework and assumes the \(f_j\) preserve also the holomorphic symplectic form \(\Omega\). The corresponding hyperbolic suspension, fibered over \(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}^2\) with fiber \(M\), is called a hyperbolic holomorphically symplectic suspension. Many results and conjectures follow on the subject.\N\NSections 6 to 8 focus on examples. The authors recall the examples of suspensions of K3 surfaces from [\textit{L. Qin} and \textit{B. Wang}, Geom. Topol. 22, No. 4, 2115--2144 (2018; Zbl 1398.32024)] and prove the construction extends to higher-dimensional hyper-Kähler manifolds arising as the Hilbert scheme of points on the Kummer surface \(\mathrm{Km}\). Precisely, \(f :\mathrm{Km}\rightarrow\mathrm{Km}\) extends to \(f^{[n]}:\mathrm{Km}^{[n]} \rightarrow\mathrm{Km}^{[n]}\) on the Hilbert scheme of order \(n\) in a natural way. Theorem 6.1, following Theorem 5.8 and its corollary, then states that \(S(\mathrm{Km}^{[n]}, f^{[n]})\) is a non-Kähler compact complex manifold with trivial canonical bundle which admits a balanced metric and it is not \(k\)-pluriclosed for any \(k = 1, 2,\ldots, 2n-1\).\N\NIn Section 7, a construction of \( S=S(T^8 , f_A , \mathrm{Id},\mathrm{Id},\mathrm{Id}) \) with \(f_A\) arising from a carefully found linear map, gives a hyperbolic diffeomorphism of \(T^8\) which preserves the pseudo-hyper-Kähler structure and in particular both the hyper-complex structure and the holomorphic symplectic form. Then, \(S\) admits a pseudo-hyper-Kähler structure but no Kähler metrics compatible with one of the complex structures.\N\NSection 8 has a similar result for a suspension with an odd dimensional \(M\).
