Minkowski problems for geometric measures

From MaRDI portal

The authors undertake the task of surveying the work that has been done on Minkowski type problems for convex bodies. The development has been particularly lively during the last three decades. As an introduction, they describe three topics for planar polygons: the Minkowski problem (easy), Aleksandrov's integral curvature (moderate), and the logarithmic Minkowski problem (difficult). The main interest is in geometric measures \(M(K,\cdot)\) (finite Borel measures on the unit sphere, depending on a convex body \(K\)) that can be obtained as differential measures of some geometric functional on convex bodies (using Wulff shapes or convexifications of positive functions). The general Minkowski problem asks for necessary and sufficient conditions on a measure \(\mu\) yielding the existence (and possible the uniqueness) of a convex body \(K\) with \(M(K,\cdot)=\mu\). An essential role for the solution play variational methods, which are explained in general terms. After these introductory remarks, the authors describe in Section 5 the relevant problems within the original Brunn-Minkowski theory: the classical Minkowski problem for the surface area measure, the analogues for \(i\)th area measures and for \(i\)th curvature measures, the Aleksandrov problem. Section 6 is devoted to the dual curvature measures, introduced by \textit{Y. Huang} et al. [Acta Math. 216, No. 2, 325--388 (2016; Zbl 1372.52007)], which can be viewed as differential measures of the dual quermassintegrals. They are integrals of powers of radial functions, pushed forward by the radial Gauss map. The chord measures, more recently introduced by \textit{E. Lutwak} et al. [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 77, No. 7, 3277--3330 (2024; Zbl 1566.52005)] and treated in Section 7, are related to the chord integrals known from integral geometry; they are translation invariant. A generalization are the cone chord measures. The \(L_p\) Brunn-Minkowski theory, which came to full blossom through the work of Lutwak in the 1990s, gives rise to the \(L_p\) Minkowski problem, the \(L_p\) Aleksandrov problem, the \(L_p\) dual Minkowski problem, the \(L_p\) chord Minkowski problem. They are studied in Section 8. Generalizations lead to Orlicz Minkowski problems. The remaining sections deal with closely related problems, such as the Gauss image problem, and with Minkowski problems for similar measures coming from other fields, such as capacitary measures and their \(L_p\) versions and Gaussian surface area measures. Altogether, this survey article addresses itself to a broad public, explaining basic material as well as providing details of interest to workers in the field. For example, besides demonstrations of the role of differential measures and of the variational method, there are hints to Monge-Ampère equations, regularity, curvature flows, and the relation to geometric inequalities.
