Noncommutative smooth spaces

From MaRDI portal

The article is both a tour d'horizon and a presentation of new ideas and principles on non-commutative (differential-)geometric structures. In the first section the authors recall the notion of smooth algebras and modules over smooth algebras. They study the cohomological properties of such modules and discuss prominent examples of smooth algebras like the non-commutative affine space, various sorts of matrix algebras, the algebra of finite paths in a finite oriented graph, etc. After introduction of representation spaces of smooth algebras the authors discuss non-commutative analogues of differential-geometric structures. Their observations are based on the principle that ``non-commutative structures of some kind on an algebra \(A\) give an analogous `commutative' structure on the representation scheme \((\text{Repr}_n^A)_{n\geq 1}\). In this sense the authors define (trace) functions, vector fields, differential forms and De Rham cohomology over the smooth algebra \(A\). Up to here the constructions and examples are 'affine'. In particular the representation schemes are affine as well. In the second part of the article the authors present a general approach to non-commutative algebraic geometry based on so-called pre-topology and non-commutative schemes. The considerations comprise not only the usual schemes but also algebraic spaces. Several constructions of algebraic geometry will be generalized to non-commutative algebraic geometry, like covers of non-commutative spaces and in turn the category of non-commutative spaces as well as coherent sheaves. The third part of the article is dedicated to the non-commutative projective space which will be defined as a space representing a certain covariant functor from the category of affine spaces to the category of sets.
