Partial stability and control

From MaRDI portal

This book is an extensive description of problems, methods and results concerning stability of time-varying, finite-dimensional ordinary differential equations with respect to part of the variables. The basic definition (Lyapunov-Rumyantsev formulation) is as follows. Let \(y\in\mathbb{R}^m\), \(z\in\mathbb{R}^p\), \(x=(y,z)\). The system \[ \dot x= X(t,x) \] is \(y\)-stable if for each \(\varepsilon>0\) and each \(t_0\) there exists \(\delta>0\) such that \[ |x_0|<\delta\Rightarrow |y(t)|<\varepsilon \] for \(t\geq t_0\). Other notions (uniform stability, asymptotic stability and so on) are defined in analogous way. As a motivation for this study, the author reports in the introduction an exposition of many applications and practical situations where the problem arises in a natural fashion. Then he reviews in detail the wide literature on this subject. One reason of further interest is that this book offers in particular an overview on the Russian literature, which is usually not familiar in Western countries. The main purpose is to illustrate how the principal approaches of the classical (i.e., with respect to all variables) stability theory can be extended to the treatment of the problem at hand. In particular, the author considers the Lyapunov second method and all its variations (invariance principle, vector Lyapunov functions, comparison principle). Moreover, the analogy with certain controllability problems is enlightened. The problem of partial stability extends in a natural way to the feedback stabilization problem with respect to part of the variables. This is related in turn to certain optimization problems on the infinite horizon. The development of the subject starts with the linear case (Chapter I). Chapter II is devoted to systems which can be dealt with at the linear approximation. Essentially, nonlinear systems are treated in Chapters III and IV. Finally, game-theoretic problems, functional differential equations and stochastic systems are considered in Chapters V, VI and VII, respectively.
