On the local-global divisibility of torsion points on elliptic curves and GL₂-type varieties

Abstract: Let be a prime number and let be a number field. Let be an elliptic curve defined over . We prove that if is odd, then the local-global divisibility by any power of holds for the torsion points of . We also show with an example that the hypothesis over is necessary. We get a weak generalization of the result on elliptic curves to the larger family of -type varieties over . In the special case of the abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication over we obtain that for all prime , except a finite number depending on , the local-global divisibility by any power of holds for the torsion points of
