Abstract: Let S2 be the 2-dimensional unit sphere and let Jalpha denote the nonlinear functional on the Sobolev space H1,2(S2) defined by J_alpha(u) = frac{alpha}{4}int_{S^2}| abla u|^2 domega + int_{S^2} u domega -ln int_{S^2} e^{u} domega, where domega denotes Lebesgue measure on S2, normalized so that intS2domega=1. Onofri had established that Jalpha is non-negative on H1(S2) provided alphageq1. In this note, we show that if Jalpha is restricted to those uinH1(S2) that satisfy the Aubin condition: int_{S^2}e^u x_j dw=0quad ext{for all}1leq jleq 3, then the same inequality continues to hold (i.e., Jalpha(u)geq0) whenever alphageq2/3epsilon0 for some epsilon0>0. The question of Chang-Yang on whether this remains true for all alphageq1/2 remains open.
