The purpose of the paper under the review is to establish a theory of Miyawaki liftings, given by the pullbacks of Ikeda liftings. The author defines the Miyawaki liftings more generally and obtains their numerous properties, such as certain seesaw identities, in both local and global case. In the local case, the author gives an explicit description of the Miyawaki liftings for almost tempered unitary representations, and obtains a new case of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. In the global case, the author discusses the non-vanishing of the Miyawaki liftings using the obtained seesaw identities and the global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture.
