This work deals with a quasilinear non-local wave equation. Hence, a one space dimensional hyperbolic equation is considered with a nonlinear forcing term depending only on the dependent variable \(u\). The non-locality is introduced by an integral of the dependent variable. The variable \(x\) belongs to the open interval \((0,1)\). Homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions are assumed. Initial conditions for the displacement \(u\) and and the velocity are prescribed at \(t=0\) as functions of \(x\). This equation models an electrostatically actuated MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) device. The model depends on two positive physical parameters. The authors prove the local existence for all values of one of the parameters whereas they show that the solution globally exists for restricted values of this parameter. They also demonstrate that the solution quenches in finite time when initial conditions vanish. They solved the problem numerically with a finite difference scheme. Various simulations of the solution are presented illustrating the relevant theoretical results. | |||
