The authors develop a general theory of \(LU\) factorizations related to complete systems of orthogonal polynomials with discrete orthogonality relations which admit a dual system of orthogonal polynomials. As application, they consider the little \(q\)-Jacobi polynomials and the \(q\)-Hahn polynomials. They give new proofs of Haran's \(q=0\) limit results for \(q\)-Jacobi polynomials and \(q\)-Hahn polynomials [\textit{M. J. S. Haran}, The mysteries of the real prime. London Mathematical Society Monographs. New Series. 25. (Oxford): Clarendon Press. (2001; Zbl 1014.11001)]. They discuss interpretations as spherical functions over \(p\)-adic spaces of the little \(0\)-Jacobi functions and little \(0\)-Laguerre functions. They also derive the \(p\)-adic product formula.
