Outer inverses and multi body system simulation
The authors deal with overdetermined differential-algebraic equations arising from the mathematical modeling of multi-body dynamics (Euler-Lagrange equations). A class of numerical methods for solving these equations, based on Newton-type iterative procedures using outer inverses, is introduced. It is shown, that the tangent space parametrization, proposed by \textit{F. A. Potra} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 30, No. 3, 774-789 (1993; Zbl 0781.65068)] as well as the ssf-inverse method, proposed by \textit{C. Führer} and \textit{B. Leimkuhler} [NATO ASI Ser., Ser. F 69, 143-154 (1991; Zbl 0778.70001)] might be regarded as particular cases of the methods suggested here. Numerical experiments demonstrate the working of the procedure. Finally, a general method to obtain the used outer inverses for a given rectangular matrix is provided.
