Functional models for Hilbert space operators are essential in spectral analysis by bridging the gap between an abstract geometric setting and complex function theory of one or several variables. The last decades have witnessed a proliferation of functional models for non-commutative systems of Hilbert space operators. Most common dealing with functions of free-star variables. Gelu Popescu is one of the top authorities on the subject. For more than twenty years he has build a fascinating construct, with definitive results and attractive challenges for the young researcher. The article under review deals with specific non-commutative varieties lying in operator poly-domains defined by commutator ideals. The symmetric Fock space offers the ``function theoretic'' counterpart to model such operator varieties. A universal Fock space model emerges, with strong similarities to a classical Hardy space. Dilation of operator tuples to analogs of unitary tuples is one of the main themes of this ample article.
