In this survey paper, the author discusses the interconnection of the problem of estimating the number of limit cycles of planar polynomial systems (Hilbert's 16th problem) and the problem of estimating the number of isolated zeros of certain abelian integrals. In the first part of the paper, some basic concepts and methods are introduced. In the second one, a number of recent results obtained by different authors are presented.
