Abstract: Let K denote an algebraically closed field and let V denote a vector space over K with finite positive dimension. We consider a pair of linear transformations A:VoV and A*:VoV that satisfy the following conditions: (i) each of A,A* is diagonalizable; (ii) there exists an ordering lbraceVibracei=0d of the eigenspaces of A such that A*VisubseteqVi1+Vi+Vi+1 for 0leqileqd, where V1=0 and Vd+1=0; (iii) there exists an ordering lbraceVibracei=0delta of the eigenspaces of A such that AVi*subseteqVi1*+Vi*+Vi+1* for 0leqileqdelta, where V1*=0 and Vdelta+1*=0; (iv) there is no subspace W of V such that AWsubseteqW, AWsubseteqW, Weq0, WeqV. We call such a pair a {it tridiagonal pair} on V. It is known that d=delta. For 0leqileqd let hetai (resp. hetai) denote the eigenvalue of A (resp. A) associated with Vi (resp. Vi*). The pair A,A* is said to have {it q-Racah type} whenever hetai=a+bq2id+cqd2i and hetai=a+bq2id+cqd2i for 0leqileqd, where q,a,b,c,a,b,c are scalars in K with q,b,c,b,c nonzero and q2otinlbrace1,1brace. This type is the most general one. We classify up to isomorphism the tridiagonal pairs over K that have q-Racah type. Our proof involves the representation theory of the quantum affine algebra Uq(widehatmathfraksl2).
